p. 339-370. This important article counteracts the older view that the Renaissance broke with the Christian past with a renewal of paganism when, in fact, the vast majority of the writers and artists had a deep devotion to the Christian faith through the Augustinian tradition. This evinced in the writings of Petrarch, Salutati and Valla. Their strong study also of the Apostle Paul led them to come closer to Calvin's understanding of election than that of Luther. (Although the author does not note it, Calvin quotes Valla in his Institutes of the Christian Religion). An important small contribution to an oft neglected area of study.
