They distributed socialist and Marxist literature in Havana from the late 1930's to 1952, when Batista outlawed the Communist party and began an extensive program of censorship. Jose Marti's writings began to be banned and though he was "an apostle for independence" and fearful of U.S. domination of Cuba, his views were moderate though Fidel Castro supplanted his ideas and cast them as being part of the Communist system.
