Pierre Rebuffi was the jurist whose expertise was in canon law and also defending monarchical law. While serving as Professor of law at Paris, Francis I summoned him to work on the Roman Rota and he was retained by Henry II. These are the core volumes on understanding constitutional thought in sixteenth-century France. In three volumes. Volume I and II were published in 1555. Volume III was published in 1567, all printed by the Sennetonios fratres (brothers) with volumes 3 having a different and larger printer's device. Volume I (unnumbered) of the three-volume set. In this volume, there are seven treatises each with its own title page though the pagination is consecutive. There is the title page and seven Tractatii (de literis obligatoriis, de chirographorum, de sentitiis praeiudicalibus seu provisionabilibus, de sententiis executoriis, de reuocationibus, de literis ciuilibus, and de supplicationibus. Besides the Latin text documents are quoted in Middle French (see Baudrier, H.l. Bib. Lyonnaise, VII, p. 421. Volume 1; [40]539. Volume II, [48] 475, [1] deals with the Commenatiorum in constiutiones regis Gallicas. Volume III [8]. 569, [55]. each with pictorial woodcut initials, bound in full mottled calf, raised bands with compartments fully gilt decorated, title and volume number within two compartments [vol. II has been rubbed off] some contemporary but scholarly marginal notes or underlining, a few leaves with marginal repairs, some spots of damp staining to outer margins, outer edges of boards and joints show wear or splitting. In all a good set of this scholarly work.
