It was the main transport hub where four rail lines met and an essential supply center for Italy. The Fifteenth Air Force was able to began bombing in November 1943 which helped bring about "Operation Husky" and then the construction of bases near Foggia in Italy when Innsbruck now became in full range of the bombers.
