By the late 19th Century they began to devote themselves to full Portuguese administration of the entire country with a goal of developing the mining, agricultural and other interests. Although slavery was not the primary means of obtaining labor, its Portuguese ruling classes fully exploited the opportunity. Here Compte Braz reports on the various developments after the development of the Portuguese Republic in 1910. . An early page shows an African who is merely called a plantation laborer in front of his grass hut.
