The physiognomic classic that dominated the 18th and early 19th centuries with Bronte, Dickens, Hardy and even Oscar Wilde in this now discredited interpretation. Three volumes in four translated from the last Paris edition by Rev. C. Moore, Vol. 1: 243, Vol. 2 & 3: 186, 187-288 and Vol. 4: xi-[15]16-334pp., illustrated with several hundred engravings (356 full page engravings including the three frontispieces and one folding facsimile letter with a repair), bound in full tree calf, board edges decorated with a gilt roll, raised bands, double red morocco labels gilt, fully gilt decorated, top edges gilt, with the bookplate of Earl of Cromer (Evelyn Baring, 1841-1917) the British Consul-General in Egypt and a member of the influential Baring banking family. Joints lightly rubbed, closed tear to upper margin of page 90, monkey plate following page 125 has half of the folding plate lacking. A few small chips to heads but still quite nice.
