Japanese Prints and Drawings from the Vever Collection

(New York): Sotheby Parke Bernet/Rizzoli International, 1976. Limited Edition. Folio. Item #014682

In three volumes limited to only 2000 sets. This collection was accumulated by Vever from 1880 and by the 1920s he had disposed of many thousand to a Japanese industrialist from which eventually ended up in the Tokyo National Museum. The outbreak of war in 1939 and the occupation of France, led to the complete disappearance of what had become a legendary collection and is survival remained in doubt until it was announced Sothebys would sell within two sales, one in 1974 and another in 1975. These volumes comprise not only those sold at auction but those rarities owned by the present owner that would not be sold. A total of 979 items all illustrated with about 69 in color, arranged chronologically. A marvelous and useful work for the Japanese art Collector. Bound in light and dark brown cloth stamped in gilt, spine lettering and top edges gilt. An exceptionally fine set in nearly fine pictorial dust jackets housed in publisher’s slipcase. A very heavy set.

Price: $330.00
