The volume on the Northeast shows how two dedicated photographers captured a definitive history of the region in the decade following World War II including both mainstream and and the tiny lines. The Mid-Atlantic volume covers the Lackawanna, B & O, Reading, and lesser lines; The volume on the south has many rare photographs and captures a bygone era with the emerging of a new one. The volume on the Heartland goes up the Mississippi River into St. Louis, Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul and all the way to Denver including lesser locations in the late steam and early diesel period. finally, the volume on the West shows not only the last day of steam in the west and the rise of the diesels but the hobos atop the rail cards on their way to California and the lesser lines which have now faded into oblivion or takeovers.
