530p. folding map as frontispiece showing Russia as was the decade before the Crimean War. The first three hundred pages give thorough descriptions of St. Petersburg and Moscow, describing the religion, including sects within the Russian church, the public sledge drivers, the Bolshoi, pickpockets, vapour baths, the Hermitage, the various peoples who had moved from the provinces to the cities. Here is one of the best descriptions of life in the generation before Dostoevsky and Tolstoy but with many of those characters still present when they began to write. The last part of the book deals with the Baltic Provinces, Riga, the Estonians, the Crimea and many other fascinating aspects.
