True Story of the Lost Shackle; or, Seven Years with the Indians

Salem, Oregon: Capital Printing Co. Original Wraps. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Good / No Dust Jacket as Issued. Item #013369

Important early fiction based on writer's experiences in the Far West. Graff 966; Rader 1017; Flake 2641A. frontispiece, four illustrations in text including one full page. Pink wrappers with some color run at very top of front cover not extending to text. Eberstadt thought it was based upon historical events. The story has Lillian Ainsley migrating to the Yellowstone Valley in 1871 where they establish a cattle-ranching operation but Lillian is captured by the Indians [term in text is savages]--the story also has a case of Brigham Young stealing a young woman for a wife. We think Ayer's conjecture is correct that the story seems typical of experiences of the time but fictionalized.
