Limited to 1650 copies. vii, 197, illustrations, 80 plates. French text. Goujon was both the major artists of the French Renaissance whose contributions were not only in sculpture but also in architecture. In 1547 he became "sculptor to the king" (Henry II of France). He worked with Lescot to provide some of the most famous works in France including the Foundation of the Innocents, Caryatids; Allegories on the facade of the Louvre and the Four Seasons. He was a Protestant and escaped the French Wars of Religion by exiling himself to Italy. He died in Bologna in 1572. Bound in stiff paper wraps printed in red and black with glassine wrapper. some light toning, glassine with a few minor ships. A very good copy.
