183p. index. Biography of William E. Burton who fled England in 1934 and came to America after marrying a sixteen-year=old orphan girl whil already married. He settled in Philadelphia and established himself as actor and director. He founded and edited the Gentleman's Magaine and hired struggling actor, Edgar Allen Poe, as cooeditor and it was in this journal that many of Poe's short stories and poems were first published.
