A History of Japanese Colour-Prints

London: William Heinmann, 1920. First Edition. Quarto. Item #011683

2nd printing. 207pp. Scholarly treatise on Japanese color prints, their development, the artist, the beginning of wood engraving Illustrated with full-page plates (some color). This is the first comprehensive survey of Japanese wood-engraving, Andersons monograph in the Portfolio appeared in 1895. The first attempt to write a history of this are was Strange's totally inadequate Japanese illustration of 1897. But in order to appreciate Japanese wood-engraving to the full, we must know the interrelation between the various artists, and the successive stages of development in their art. A very good copy bound in green cloth lettered and decorated in gilt, spine lettering gilt, two small edge tears to head, just a tiny bit of foxing to lower edge of leaves. A handsome copy.
