Antoine-Louis Barye: Sculptor of Romantic Realism
University Park, PA; (1984): The Pennsylvannia State University Press. First Edition. Quarto. Item #011588
210 pages and (85) pp. of numbered illustrations, chapter notes and Index. Scholarly treatise of increasingly important artist of the 19th century. Batye's work combines scientific precision (especially zoological), technical skill (particularly with bronze), knowledge of classical allegory (Greek and Roman), and, despite his apparent thoroughgoing realism, composition approaching abstract expressionism. An introductory chapter tells what little is known of Barye's life, his friendship with Delacroix, his apprenticeship under the goldsmith to Napoleon I, and more. A fine copy bound in brown cloth, spine lettering silver, in a near fine pictorial dust jacket with spine faded to pink. Very nice.
