cxx, [8], 6-115, [1], p. , 1 l. portrait, facsimiles. The classic Renaissance work originally published in 1567 [Lucca] on the subject of Torquato Tasso (1544-1595) and love. One of the great poets of the late Renaissance, he wrote eloquently about love but often went into bouts of insanity. Just as Pope Clement VIII was going to crown him the poet lauretate of the Italians in 1586 he became ill and died. ex libris stamp to lower corner of title page. Frontispiece portrait of Tasso, bound in 3/4 vellum over decorative paper covered boards, red morocco spine label gilt with gilt rules. A very good copy with just a bit of bowing ro boards.
