The book tells the story of travelers, immigrant wagon trains and stagecoaches drawn to the area by the shallow pools of water near Maricopa Wells (a spot noted on the earliest maps of Arizona Territory). The days of the Butterfield and the problems with stage travel and mail delivery were overcome when the railroad came through making it an important stop and for a brief period nearly became the state capitol. Besides maps and a careful use of existing sources for Arizona history, the author has come upon fresh materials and produced what is the essential work on the area. The chart on the Butterfield Overland Stage, the Chronological History of the area and the section on why the roads were named is a major aid to those who live in the area as well as to those who wish to know its history.
